The Power of Resilience: How to Keep Going When It Feels Impossible

Posted on July 1, 2025

Let’s be honest — life can hit hard sometimes. There are seasons when just getting out of bed feels like a victory. When plans fall apart, relationships strain, health fails, or hope starts to flicker, it’s easy to wonder: How do I keep going?

The answer isn’t always simple, but it often begins with one powerful word: resilience.

What Is Resilience?

Resilience isn’t about pretending everything is fine. It’s not about being strong all the time or never feeling overwhelmed. Resilience is about the ability to bend without breaking — to feel the weight of life and still choose to keep moving forward, even if it’s just one small step at a time.

When It Gets Hard to Keep Going, Try This:

Here are some steps to help you navigate the tough moments and tap into your resilience:

1. Pause and Breathe

When everything feels like too much, the first step isn’t to push harder — it’s to pause. Take a few deep breaths. Give yourself permission to stop and acknowledge what you’re feeling. You don’t have to fix everything right now. You just need to be present and breathe.

“Inhale courage, exhale doubt.”

2. Speak Kindly to Yourself

Self-talk is powerful. If you’re constantly criticizing yourself, the weight of hardship gets heavier. Practice saying things like:

  • “I’m doing the best I can.”
  • “It’s okay to struggle. I’m still strong.”
  • “I’ve gotten through hard things before — I’ll get through this too.”

Replace harsh words with grace. You deserve it.

3. Break It Down

Big problems can feel impossible. Try breaking things into smaller, manageable steps:

  • What can I do today?
  • What’s one thing I can check off my list?
  • Who can I ask for help?

Progress doesn't have to be fast — it just needs to be forward.

4. Lean Into Your Support System

You are not meant to do life alone. Talk to someone — a friend, family member, counselor, or faith leader. Share what’s really going on. You don’t need to have all the answers. Sometimes just being heard is the beginning of healing.

5. Reconnect With Purpose

When everything feels uncertain, remind yourself why you’re still trying. Maybe it’s for your children. Maybe it’s for your future self. Maybe it’s because you know, deep down, that this pain won’t last forever. Hold onto that purpose like a lifeline.

6. Take Care of Your Body and Mind

Resilience is rooted in how we treat ourselves physically and emotionally. Try to:

  • Eat nourishing foods.
  • Move your body, even just a little.
  • Get rest when you can.
  • Do something small that brings you peace — music, nature, prayer, journaling, etc.

Self-care isn’t selfish — it’s how we survive and thrive.

7. Celebrate Small Wins

Getting out of bed. Making that phone call. Choosing not to give up. These are victories. Celebrate them. Life isn’t just about big moments — it’s about the quiet courage of showing up for yourself, even when no one sees it.

Final Thoughts: You Are Still Here

You’re reading this because you haven’t given up — and that alone is a sign of strength. Resilience isn’t about being perfect or fearless. It’s about continuing, especially when the road is rough.

You don’t have to have it all together. You just have to keep showing up.

And if today all you can do is survive that’s more than enough.
